In the month since Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico FLLAC students and staff have rallied to help out. Spearheaded by Marilu Bailey, Job Coach in the ASD/DD Program, FLLAC collected over 20 cases of adult diapers, 40 cases of water, Gatorade, Pedialyte, batteries, flashlights, first aid kits, toiletries, extension cords, formula, gloves, hand sanitizer, over the counter medications of all kinds, pet food, canned goods, laundry detergent, trash-bags and much more. Marilu was able to connect with Mr. John Sweeney, the Athletic Director at Ayer-Shirley Regional High School, to arrange to have the goods brought down to Puerto Rico and they will be shipped down during the week of October 30. Mr. Sweeney’s mother, a nurse at a New Haven CT hospital, will be escorting the shipment when she travels to Puerto Rico with a medical team from her hospital. FLLAC staff and members of the FLLAC community also collected monetary donations which were used to purchase a generator for a family who needed to power a nebulizer and to have access to something we all take for granted, ice water.
We are so proud of the tremendous response we got from everyone at FLLAC. Our community stepped up and showed great generosity and demonstrated to our students the kind of caring and kindness we try to show everyday in all that we do at FLLAC. Thank you to Marilu and to all the staff and students who worked hard to organize this effort.
